MADD Canada's Financial Reporting

MADD Canada wants to ensure that all its donors and supporters have the most up to date and complete information on how MADD Canada raises its funds and how those funds are spent on MADD Canada’s programs and services.

Attached is MADD Canada’s approved 2009-2010 financial budget (PDF). When reviewing the financial budgets for any charitable organization, there are certain financial areas on which donors and supporters should focus.

The first area is whether the charitable organization exceeds its disbursement quota required by the Income Tax Act (ITA). Charitable organizations are required under the ITA to spend on charitable activities at least 80% of the amount of the donations for which charitable receipts were issued in the preceding year.  MADD Canada has budgeted in 2009-2010 for receipted charitable donations of $3,476,238, for which the disbursement quota for the following year would be $2,789,990. For the fiscal year 2009-2010, MADD Canada has budgeted to spend $5,648,541 on charitable activities. A similar level of spending in the following year would exceed the disbursement quota requirements under the ITA by approximately $2,867,550.

A second area is the percentage of total revenue that is spent on charitable activities. Since there is no prescribed level of the percentage of total revenues that must be spent on charitable activities, practices vary substantially across the charitable sector. Small organizations, which depend solely on volunteers for their programs and fundraising activities, may have a higher percentage of total revenues spent on charitable activities than national organizations. For organizations like MADD Canada, which support thousands of volunteers across Canada, there is a substantial cost in supporting the community volunteers and as a result greater fundraising costs.  For these organizations, a commonly expressed goal in the charitable sector is to expend at least 60% of total revenues on direct charitable activities.  MADD Canada has budgeted to spend 69% of its total revenues on its charitable activities in 2009-2010.
