HSAS and MADD Canada launch summer campaign against impaired driving

Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan (HSAS) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD Canada) are teaming up this year during the peak crash times of the summer season to urge Saskatchewan motorists not to drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs. The two organizations launched their public awareness campaign today in Regina with a press conference and the release of new posters and a radio public service announcement (PSA).

“The Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan is proud to join with MADD Canada in urging Saskatchewan residents to not drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs,” says Chris Driol, the President of HSAS. “The 2,700 Health Care Professionals who form HSAS care deeply about the lives, health and safety of our families and friends in Saskatchewan.  We have seen first hand the tragic results of impaired driving and hope that this campaign will encourage people to not drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

“Our partnership with HSAS is invaluable,” says Margaret Miller, MADD Canada’s National President-elect. “With the HSAS, we will be able to deliver our message to more Saskatchewan residents, more often this summer. It is a message that can serve as a life-saving reminder to those relaxing and partying this summer.”

Mrs. Miller adds, "Have a fun summer, drive sober on the roads and waterways, and don't get in a vehicle or a boat with a driver who has been drinking. Whether you're at the cottage, or driving to summer parties, if you are drinking or high on drugs, don’t drive."

In part, the new radio PSA states:  “The 2700 members of the Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan have too much experience with the tragedies caused by impaired driving. From EMS personnel who are the first at the crash scene to Respiratory Specialists who keep victims alive when they arrive at the hospital… Physical and Occupational Therapists that help with movement and independence… and Mental Health Professionals, there to help with the psychological fallout from the trauma….”

The PSA concludes with the sobering message:  “All too often, HSAS and MADD Canada hear these words: “I never thought it would happen to me.”  Please: Don’t drive impaired.”

HSAS is a labour union representing more than 2,700 professional, technical and emergency medical services workers in Saskatchewan’s health care system. MADD Canada is the pre-eminent national victims group with a mission to eliminate impaired driving and support the victims of this violent crime.

The organizations' public awareness drive runs through the Labour Day holiday weekend.
