MADD Canada’s ‘very pleased’ with Ontario Government’s Legislation
MADD Canada’s CEO: “This will strengthen the Graduated License Program and save the lives of many young drivers.”

November 18, 2008 / Ontario Release -- Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD Canada) applauded the Ontario Government’s advance of legislation designed to stop young drivers from drinking and driving.

Andrew Murie, MADD Canada’s CEO, states: “The Ontario Government has taken some very important steps today. This new legislation will strengthen the province’s graduated licensing program and save many young drivers who are being killed on our roads as a result of impaired driving.”

“We are very pleased to see Ontario move forward with what are some of the most progressive graduating licensing measures in our country.”

The CEO remarked that Ontario Ministry of Transportation officials had been in discussions with the organization for months about changes to graduated licenses. He explained that MADD Canada has an on-going dialogue with Ontario officials as part of MADD’s on-going policy initiative Rating the Provinces. Mr. Murie stated: “Many of these measures are taken from the pages of our document, which does a good job detailing the country’s best practices. I am happy to report that, today, Ontario becomes one the country’s standard bearers for the most effective graduated licensing programs.”

MADD Canada’s policy relating to graduated licensing programs and other young driver issues are on-line in a document entitled, Youth and Impaired Driving in Canada: Opportunities for Progress.
