Since the York Regional Police 'Safe Roads ... Your Call' campaign launched June 28, 2007, 100 impaired drivers have now been arrested as the result of citizens calling 9-1-1.
The 100th arrest was made Saturday, November 10, in Richmond Hill. A vehicle was observed by citizens going through a red traffic light before striking a tree. The 9-1-1 call led to the driver, who was not injured, being arrested for impaired driving.
From June 28, to November 13, York police received 860 9-1-1 calls, as compared to 506 during the same time period last year and an increase of 127 per cent in the amount of arrests made.
Impaired driving remains the number one criminal cause of death in Canada.
