SAINT JOHN - MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Canada's national awareness campaign kicks off locally today with a grocery bagging at the Atlantic Superstore on Rothesay Avenue and the Rothesay Sobeys, located on the Hampton Road.
"Part of our mission statement is to stop impaired driving and this helps us bring awareness to the public," says local chapter president Lora Skead. "Awareness is the first step in stopping 100 per cent preventable crime."
As Rick McNulty and his family reached out to MADD Canada for assistance after the senseless death of Greg and Laura O'Dell two years ago, they now look to lending a hand to the local chapter as it kicks off its Red Ribbon campaign.
Red ribbon, symbolic of the campaign running through Jan. 5, 2009, can be tied to car antennas, key chains, rearview mirrors, backpacks and purses.
They're a reminder to drive safely and sober, as well as a way to honour those who are forever gone or changed by impaired driving.
Starting today, you will be able to find the Red Ribbon donation boxes, red ribbons and bookmarks at various retailers throughout the city, and the surrounding area.
