For some people, the mental anguish and images of the lives of family members, friends or co-workers who have been killed or seriously injured by a drunk driver is a daily reminder of the dangers of drinking and driving.

For those fortunate enough to have never been personally impacted by impaired driving, the only reminder might be a red ribbon on their vehicle.

The Halton chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is beginning its annual Project Red Ribbon campaign tomorrow (Saturday) at Burlington Mall.

There will be a MADD community display for public viewing from 9:30 a. m.-5:30 p. m. with a campaign kickoff ceremony at 11 a. m.

MADD Halton has set aside 14 dates from now until Dec. 6 where volunteers will be at locations around the region to sell red ribbons in support of MADD’s awareness and victim support programs.

The ribbons can be purchased for a donation of any amount to MADD.

After the kickoff event, Burlington Mall will host the red ribbon volunteers again the next day (Sunday), from 11 a. m.-5 p. m.

The other Burlington MADD red ribbon sale dates are Saturday, Nov. 21, from 9 a. m.- 6 p. m., and Sunday, Nov. 22, from 10 a. m.-5 p. m., each day at the Fortinos supermarket at 2025 Guelph Line.

Project Red Ribbon is designed to combat impaired driving during the holidays and will run until the first Monday after New Year’s Day. The red ribbon is a symbol of a person’s commitment to drive safe and sober during the holiday season and throughout the year.

MADD is asking Halton residents to tie a MADD Canada red ribbon to their car antenna, side mirror or other visible location on the vehicle and/or on their keychain.

MADD Halton officials say every day, on average, four Canadians are killed and 207 more injured due to alcohol and drug-related crashes.

Halton Regional Police statistics compiled by MADD Halton shows between 2007-08 in Burlington, impaired driving charges dropped from 105 to 94. The number of 12-hour licence suspensions in Burlington for the same period dropped from 154 to 152.
