MADD Red Ribbon campaign begins
AM 640 - Edmonton
November 5, 2009
Project Red Ribbon is an annual campaign by Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
In Edmonton, police say we've seen five fatal crashes already this year involving alcohol and eight more where people were seriously hurt.
"More times than not, the impaired driver kills or injures either themselves or somebody inside their vehicle," says Staff Sergeant Bill Horne of the EPS Traffic Section. "So if they happen to survive that crash, guess what--they're living the rest of their life with the guilt of killing or seriously injuring somebody they dearly love.
And for Horne, it's personal. He knows all too well what it's like to deliver the tragic news to family members.
"Every time I think about it, pictures of doom still flash in my mind and I have chills running up and down my spine," says Horne. "It's a parent's absolute worst, worst nightmare."
You can pick up your red ribbon at EPS headquarters and at several businesses in the city.
