CORNWALL - Celebrating a life and raising awareness are the focus of a new run organized by a city sports club.
When popular local athlete Heather Saaltink died last year in a tragic motor vehicle accident allegedly caused by a drunk driver, it took an emotional toll on members of the Cornwall Multisport Club, many of whom were friends of the young woman.
It was natural then when they were looking to add a new run to their schedule, they would do it in memory of Saaltink, said Wendy Henry, race director.
"We had decided last year at our final meeting to host a new run for the community," she said. "Heather died just before Christmas so we decided to put on a run in memory of her, as their members are all members of the club.
"We want to celebrate her life and raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving."
As such, the first annual Heather Saaltink Memorial Run will be held Saturday, Nov. 28 at Longue Sault Public School, beginning at 10 a. m.
Everyone, whether or not a club member, is invited to support the cause.
Participants can choose to enter either a 10-km run, a 5-km run/walk, or a kids 2-km run/walk. The 10-km event begins at 10 a. m., the 5-km at 10: 15 a. m., and the 2-km run/walk at 11:30 a. m.
"Even though the 2 km is technically a kids' race, we are accepting adults, too," noted Henry, who is race director. "Everyone is welcome to participate."
All runs are free, but in lieu of run fees, donations and pledges are being accepted in support of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
