MADD collects $1,200 in Pictou
November 16, 2009

Mothers Against Drunk Driving doesn’t aim to collect funds during the annual Red Ribbon campaign reminding motorists to drive sober.

But during a recent Pictou County traffic blitz, drivers made voluntary donations totaling $1,200.

"Our goal is to get the red ribbons out there, but we’re certainly very appreciative of the support," said Claire Timmons, president of the organization’s Pictou County chapter.

Drunk drivers kill about 1,400 each year and that doesn’t count the people injured or the cases where drivers might be impaired but are not convicted, said Ms. Timmons.

Despite the statistics, social attitudes have changed and drinking and driving is now seen as unacceptable, said Ms. Timmons.

Everyone knows someone whose life has been affected negatively by a drunk driver, she said.
