Red Ribbon campaign kicks off
Chatham This Week
December 2, 2009

Drivers were tying one on for MADD last week as the annual Red Ribbon campaign got underway.

Members of the Chatham-Kent chapter of MADD Canada along with Chatham-Kent Police officers handed out hundreds of the ribbons baring the Mothers Against Drunk Driver's logo at Tim Horton's drive thru across Chatham.

Lori Meredith said the event was a first time fundraiser for the local chapter but from the weighted bucket of donations she held as drivers wound through the Park Ave. coffee shop's drive thru, it was a success.

"This is something new and it's doing well, very well," she said.

Together she and Const. Mike Thompson handed out 200 red ribbons last Thursday between 6 and 8 a.m.

Members of MADD and the police were stationed at five other locations, including one in Wallaceburg.

MADD will also be placing donation boxes on the countertops in a number of variety stores, coffee shops and McDonald's restaurants.

"This was our main fundraiser and was all we ever did," said Meredith.

The Red Ribbon campaign runs from November through January.
