Drunk driving charges during Stampede fall

People seemed to heed the message about not drinking and driving during this year’s Calgary Stampede, according to the Calgary police traffic unit.

This year’s 10-day Calgary Stampede netted fewer impaired driving charges throughout the city compared with the two years prior, traffic acting Insp. Greg Cooper said.

I think people are getting the message and while we’re happy with the lower numbers even one drunk driver on the road is too many, Cooper said.

Cooper believes the lower numbers are also a reflection of a joint effort approach with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

But he stressed the importance of year-round Check Stops, not just during events like the Calgary Stampede.

We didn’t do anything different; were out there 365 days a year trying to catch impaired drivers and were the only police force that is out there at all times.
