MADD Canada has addressed youth issues as they relate to impaired driving since its inception in 1990. Since 1997, MADD Canada has utilized multi-media school assembly programs to communicate with young people on their level.

Too Many Youth Exposed to Alcohol and Drug-Related Driving Risks

The 2001 Student Drug Use Survey recently released by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health found that a sizeable proportion of adolescents are exposed to alcohol- and drug-related driving risks. 31.9% of the students surveyed reported being a passenger in a car driven by a drunk driver. Of the students in grades 10 to 13 who had a driver’s license, 15.1% reported driving within an hour after consuming 2 or more drinks and 19.7% reported driving within an hour after using cannabis.

Road Crashes, Impaired Driving and Youth

The fact is we have a long way to go in stopping impaired driving:

· On average 4 Canadians are killed and 200 are seriously injured in impaired driving crashes each day.
· Tragically, road crashes are the number one cause of death for youth in Canada and alcohol is involved 40% of the time.

Help stop underage drinking.
