Sheri-Lyn was a competitive swimmer, and was returning home with her parents from a swim meet on a Saturday night when their van was struck by a tractor trailer driven by a drunk driver. Sheri-Lyn and her father Tom were killed; her mother Judy survived her injuries. A friend of the family and her daughter who were in the van were also killed.

The following message was provided by Judy Gerrard.

Tom and Sheri-Lyn had so much life and happiness in them and so much to live for. Sheri-Lyn was Tom's and my life and future. Tom and I will never plan together our only child's future and hopes and dreams. Being a mother and a wife was taken from me in seconds. I will never be a mother or a grandmother. I miss Tom and Sheri-Lyn every day of my life and I do know I will see Tom and Sheri-Lyn again. I know Sheri-Lyn is with her Birth Father and her Heavenly Father.
